Tenbury Town Band brighted up a dull Saturday morning at the Wyre Forest Show and got people tapping their feet despite the rain. In the afternoon, the band entertained visitors at the Little Hereford Fete, where the sun was finally shining and quite a crowd gathered to listen to well-known tunes ranging from Abba to the Teddy Bears' Picnic!

Members of the Tenbury Town Band were pleased to unveil a blue plaque on Sunday 30 June that marks the location of the band’s very first rehearsal venue.
The band was formed in 1983 and 41 years later it is still bringing entertainment to Tenbury and beyond through its annual concerts and participation in local fetes, parades and civic events.
Mel Parker, who was one of the band’s original members and is now musical director, remembers the band’s early rehearsals very well. “We were conducted by Keith Colwell, Tenbury’s local policeman, who used to come to rehearsals still in uniform and sometimes while still on duty. He would arrive and ask if the kettle was on! If he got a call on his walkie-talkie while conducting the band, we had to be silent, and he would inform the caller that he was patrolling Teme Street!”
Rehearsals were held at the house on Berrington Road, which at the time was owned by founding member Ewart Morgan. Band member Jane Irvine now lives there, and the connection was only discovered when Mel went to the address to tutor one of Jane’s sons. “I couldn’t believe the coincidence”, says Mel. “The blue plaque is a lovely way to commemorate the band’s roots – I can’t believe we’re still going strong over 40 years later. Keith would be very proud.”

Well what a fantastic summer concert. Loosely inspired by movie themes, the repertoire ranged from Benedictus to Grease to the Time Warp. The band was pleased to welcome ex members of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Band and guest conductor Major David Marshall, former Director of Music for the Band of the Coldstream Guards. The infamous Tenbury Town Band sketch raised a few eyebrows. Dancing to I will survive from Priscilla Queen of the Dessert, intrepid band members showed off their many talents and perhaps a bit more than the audience was expecting. We shall say no more! It will certainly be a hard act to follow. Let's see what next year's concert brings ...

We were once again pleased to welcome back Matt Stimpson, this time with his amazing Delph Youth Band following their gold-winning performance in Cheltenham. They stopped in at Penlu for an impromptu concert with the Tenbury Town Band. Both bands played from their own repertoire and finished with a rousing two-band rendition of Slaidburn.

The band has just completed our annual workshop weekend with experienced conductor Matt Stimpson (winner of the Classic FM music teacher of the year award). A great time was had by all. This is an annual event and all players are welcome.
Keep an eye on our events page for our up coming engagements.
